The Definition of Acids & Bases
|
While recognizing acids and bases in common substances does not require much effort, defining and understanding acids and bases is a little more complicated.
Chemists have argued over their definitions, resulting in their definitions changing over time.
For this dialog, we will use the "Brønsted-Lowry" definition, which states:
- An acid is any substance that can donate H+ ions.
- A base is any substance that can accept H+ ions.
An ion is an atom or molecule that has a positive or negative charge; therefore, H+ represents a hydrogen atom with a positive charge.
